"SB: So there are cool people working for the City and local non-profits who have supported the project, who have the ability to redirect their resources if they want to. Like this guy Barry, from Parks and Rec. who gave us tons of wood chips when he was only supposed to give us one dump truck load. Or the people at the Fire Department. All the fire hydrants in the inner city have locks on them so you can’t just open them, so we asked them to remove it and they were surprisingly helpful. We just told them we were starting a community garden.
NW: But we also had a letter from the University of Maryland Cooperative Extension saying we had permission to use the fire hydrant, which was based us lying to them about having permission to use the land. All of the grants we received were based on this lie. It was like this process of constructing an image of legitimacy, these layers of fiction that reinforced each other."
