"Trouble is made to shine in our sky. One of the sayings my Grandmother Bowen used to quote us was: ' Shrink not from facing sorrow- she is the messenger of God to thee.'
Hard times either embitter you or leave you mellowed like crab apples and turnips after the iciness of frost. Troubles have given us perspective in our country, a kind of sorrowful sympathy and understanding- a view of all life as alternate capture and release. We know in Carolina that nothing lasts forever- neither victory nor defeat, nor spring nor summer- and no matter what comes up, we can usually find within our rich experience some precedent to steer us."
