artist Titus Kaphar works on a new project of portraits
/he quotes :

This is the use of memory
For liberation not less of love but
expanding
Of love beyond desire, and so liberation
From the future as well as the past"
T.S.Eliot

/on the first portrait : W.E.B. Dubois :
"Throughout The Souls of Black Folk Dubois returns again and again to the concept of a veil that separates and hides the lives of one community from another. This covering shields a community's true self from the rest of the world, and in so doing internally divides and fragments that community. In particular the veil makes invisible the joys and the sorrows that make us human. "

Ch.1 Of Our Spiritual Strivings

O water, voice of my heart, crying in the sand,
All night long crying with a mournful cry,
As I lie and listen, and cannot understand
The voice of my heart in my side or the voice of the sea,
O water, crying for rest, is it I, is it I?
All night long the water is crying to me.

Unresting water, there shall never be rest
Till the last moon droop and the last tide fail,
And the fire of the end begin to burn in the west;
And the heart shall be weary and wonder and cry like the sea,
All life long crying without avail,
As the water all night long is crying to me.
