Cy Twombly, Venus, 1975.

From Roland Barthes, “Cy Twombly, Works on Paper” (translated by Richard Howard):  ”the essence of writing is neither a form nor a usage but only a gesture, the gesture which produces it by permitting it to linger:  a blur, almost a blotch, a negligence.  Let us make a comparison.  What is the essence of a pair of pants (if it has such a thing)?  Certainly not that crisp and well-pressed object to be found on department-store racks;  rather, that clump of fabric on the floor, negligently dropped there when the boy stepped out of them, careless, lazy, indifferent.  The essence of an object has some relation with its destruction:  not necessarily what remains after it has been used up, but what is thrown away as being of no use.”

That Durned Ole Via Negativa

You ever say a word like naw,
that n, a, double-u instead

of no? Let's try it, naw. You feel
your jaw drop farther down and hang;

you say it slower, don't you, as if
a naw weighs twice as much as no.

It's also sadder sounding than
a no. Yore Daddy still alive?

a friend you haven't seen might ask.
If you say naw, it means you still

cannot get over him. But would
you want to? Naw. Did you hear it then,

that affirmation? You can't say naw
without the trickle of a smile.

The eggheads call that wistful, now --
O sad desire, O boiling pot

of melancholy pitch! Down in
that gloomy sadness always is

a hope. You gettin' any strange?
That always gets a naw, and a laugh.

I've had that asked of me. It's sad
to contemplate sometimes, but kind

of funny, too. It makes me think
of git and who came up with that,

and the last burdened letter hitched
to naw, that team of yous and yoked

together -- the you you are for now
and the you you might become if you

said yeah, to feel the sag of doubt
when only one of you is left

to pull the load of living. My,
but we're in lonesome country now.

I wonder if we ever leave it?
We could say yeah, but wouldn't we

be wiser if we stuck it out
with naw, and know the weight of what

we know is dragging right behind us,
the squeak and buck of gear along

with us, O mournful plea, O song
we know, by heart, by God, by heart

From his series Moko Jumbies: Dancing Spirits of Trinidad A photo essay about a stilt walking school in Cocorite, Trinidad whose main purpose is to keep children off the streets and away from drugs. Dragon Glen de Souza (founder) first taught dances like the Calypso, African dance and the jig with his former partner Cathy Ann Samuel. Searching for other activities to engage the children in, he rediscovered the art of stilt-walking, a tradition known in West Africa as the Moko Jumbies , protectors of the villages and participants in religious ceremonies. The art was brought to Trinidad by the slave trade and soon forgotten.Today Dragon’s school has over 100 members from age 4 and up. Stefan Falke, photographer

"What does life sound like?

This was the question facing Carl Sagan in 1977. He was commissioned by NASA to contribute to the Voyager Interstellar Mission, a one-way exploration into space to test the limits of just how far man-made crafts could go.

What Sagan and his team put together is the Golden Record, a phonograph (with a needle and visual instructions on how to make it play) that plays the sounds of life on Earth. There are the natural sounds, like the waves crashing, thunder rolling, and birds chirping. Then the man-made, like greetings in 55 different languages, including the first-known language spoken by humans. There’s music, including songs from Mozart, Beethoven, and Chuck Berry. (A SNL skit at the time joked that the aliens would want more Chuck Berry.) President Carter’s voice says this on the record: “This is a present from a small, distant world, a token of our sounds, our science, our images, our music, our thoughts and our feelings. We are attempting to survive our time so we may live into yours.”"

"Flower in the crannied wall,I pluck you out of the crannies,
I hold you here, root and all, in my hand,
Little flower—but if I could understand
What you are, root and all, all in all,
I should know what God and man is."
